Twice a year Berlin celebrates its museums and guests - with great success. Long ago the well proven Berlin concept was so well received, that numerous people and institutions took hold of the idea not only in Germany but abroad too: The Long Night of the Museums has become a trademark. The worldwide first Long Night of the Museums took place nine years ago (February 14, 1997) amidst the unique scenery of the Museums in Berlin. More than 80 out of 170 museums, collections, archives, memorials and exhibition sites located throughout the city of Berlin will unbolt their doors till well after midnight this winter. Above all there will be new places to explore and for the first time eight foreign cultural institutes will be participating. Berlin is a city of extremes - featuring a mere unmanageable range of (multi) cultural events. Alone the number of museums are evidence enough. Not to think of the 450.000 people from 194 nations residing in Berlin, no other city in Germany can compete with that. Cultural diversity is the motto of the 19th Long Night of the Museums and draws the attention towards a formative metropolitan reality. The "Long Night" guides the visitors to the multi-faceted sources of our culture to Spain, Italy, France, as well as to ancient Greece and Egypt and will show the influence of East Asian and Indian Art. The Museum Night offers the chance to witness not only the Argentinean Tango (Kulturforum), but also a Venetian Wedding (Schloss Charlottenburg) and a Japanese Butoh Dance (Museen Dahlem) in an absolutely harmonious ambience of a Middle European Art Museum. Foreign artists living in Germany have long been linking their particular cultural tradition to ours. This night they will present their "arrival" in contemporary Berlin. As many nationalities as there are residing in Berlin numerous cultural institutions are located throughout the city. For the first time the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, the Finnland-Institute of Science and Economy Germany, the Instituto Cervantes Berlin, the Russian House of Science and Culture, the Slovakian Institute in Berlin, the Czech Centre Berlin and the French Community and Walloon Region Brussels Representation will take part in the 19th Long Night of the Museums. The detailed program leaflets (only in German) as well as the tickets (12€/8€, children under 12 enter free) are available in all the participating museums, at box offices, at Museumspädagogischer Dienst Berlin and via www.ticketonline.de. The holder of the ticket is entitled to visit all the participating museums and institutions, to use the shuttle buses running between the venues and public transport in the tariff zone ABC.
